IELTS frequently asked questions
How are IELTS results calculated?+
Each of the four modules (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) is scored on a band from 1 to 9 in half-point increments. Your overall IELTS results are the average of the four band scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5. The IELTS certificate shows both the four section bands and the overall band.
When do I get my IELTS test results?+
Paper-based IELTS test results arrive 13 days after the exam. Computer-based IELTS test results arrive in 3-5 days. The IELTS One Skill Retake result is available within 3-8 days of the retake. You can preview your scores in the IDP / British Council candidate portal before the printed Test Report Form is posted.
How much does the IELTS exam cost in the UAE?+
As of 2026, the IELTS Academic and General Training exam costs AED 1,180 at IDP and British Council UAE test centres. The IELTS One Skill Retake costs around AED 800. Prices include both the exam fee and one electronic Test Report Form.
Is the IELTS certificate valid for UAE university admission?+
Yes. UAE federal and private universities (UAEU, Khalifa University, AUS, AUD, Zayed University, the British University in Dubai) accept the IELTS Academic certificate as proof of English proficiency. Required band scores typically range from 5.5 (undergraduate) to 7.0 (postgraduate and medicine).
What's the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?+
IELTS Academic is for university admission and professional registration. The Reading and Writing tasks use academic-style content. IELTS General Training is for migration (UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand) and some workplace requirements. The Listening and Speaking modules are identical in both versions.
Can I retake one module if I score low?+
Yes. IELTS One Skill Retake lets you re-sit a single module (Reading, Writing, Listening, or Speaking) within 60 days of your original computer-based test, at any IDP UAE test centre. Your other three band scores carry over.
