In, On, At: The Complete Guide to Prepositions of Place in English

Three tiny words that cause more mistakes in English than almost anything else: in, on, at. The rules look simple, but they trip up learners because Arabic and Hindi use single words where English uses three.

The one-sentence rule

• in = inside something (enclosed space or large area)
• on = touching a surface (or a line, a page, a floor)
• at = a specific point (address, location, event)

Think of it as size + specificity:

• at = a single point on a map
• on = a surface or a line
• in = an enclosed volume or region

When to use "in"

Use in when something is enclosed, contained, or inside a larger area.

Enclosed spaces

• I am in the kitchen.
• She is in the meeting room.
• The keys are in my bag.
• We waited in the taxi for 20 minutes.

Large geographic areas

• I live in Dubai.
• My cousin studies in Canada.
• The Emirates Palace is in Abu Dhabi.
• She works in the Middle East.

Time periods (bonus use)

• In the morning / afternoon / evening
• In July / 2026 / the summer
• In 20 minutes

When to use "on"

Use on when something is touching a surface, a line, or a floor.

Physical surfaces

• The book is on the table.
• Your keys are on the counter.
• The painting hangs on the wall.
• There is a stain on your shirt.

Floors of a building

• Our office is on the 15th floor.
• She lives on the ground floor.

Public transport (buses, trains, planes)

• I met her on the bus.
• They are on the plane to London.
• We spent 6 hours on the train.

Notice: cars and taxis use in (you sit inside them), but buses and planes use on (a legacy from when transport was open-topped).

Days and dates (bonus use)

• On Monday / Wednesday / Friday
• On the 15th of March
• On New Year's Day

When to use "at"

Use at for a specific point, address, or event.

Specific points and locations

• I am at the office.
• Meet me at the entrance.
• She is at home right now.
• The children are at school.
• He works at Emirates NBD.

Specific addresses

• I live at 15 Jumeirah Road.
• The clinic is at Villa 24, Al Wasl.

Events

• I saw her at the wedding.
• We met at the Dubai Marathon.
• They arrived at the conference on time.

Specific times (bonus use)

• At 3 PM
• At midnight
• At sunrise

Home, work, school: special cases

These three words behave a little differently.

• at home (default): I am at home. (specific point = your house)
• in the house: I am in the house. (inside the physical structure)
• at work (default): She is at work today.
• in the office: She is in the office right now. (inside the physical office)
• at school: My son is at school.
• in the classroom: He is in the classroom.

"At" is the default because you are treating home / work / school as a single point, not a physical space.

Common mistakes UAE learners make

1. Using "in" for streets and floors

Wrong: I live in Sheikh Zayed Road. Right: I live on Sheikh Zayed Road.

Wrong: My office is in the fourth floor. Right: My office is on the fourth floor.

Streets and floors are surfaces you travel across, not enclosed volumes.

2. Using "in" for schools and workplaces

Wrong: She is in school today. Right: She is at school today.

Wrong: I am in work now. Right: I am at work now.

Use "at" for the institution as a point. "In" is only for physically inside the building.

3. Getting bus vs car wrong

Wrong: I met her in the bus yesterday. Right: I met her on the bus yesterday.

Wrong: We are on a taxi. Right: We are in a taxi.

Buses / trains / planes / boats = on. Cars / taxis / small vehicles = in.

4. "Living in an address"

Wrong: I live in 24 Al Wasl Road. Right: I live at 24 Al Wasl Road.

A specific address is a point (at), not an area (in).

5. Arabic speaker specifics

Arabic uses "في" (fi) for both in and at in many contexts. This causes:

Wrong: I am in the airport now. Right: I am at the airport now.

Wrong: She is waiting in the door. Right: She is waiting at the door.

When in doubt: if you can point to a single spot, use at. If you can walk inside it and it has walls, use in.

Quick decision guide

Ask yourself these three questions:

1. Is it a point on a map (bus stop, address, event, home, work)? → use at
2. Is it a surface, line, or floor (table, wall, road, page, floor level)? → use on
3. Is it a container or big area (room, building, city, country)? → use in

If two rules seem to apply, use the more specific one.

• "She is at the office" = default position (like "at work")
• "She is in the office" = physically inside the physical office space

Both are correct, but they emphasise different things.
